From drawing board to Tuesday’s groundbreaking, Alpha Natural Resources’ new $21 million corporate headquarters already has grown by more than 20 percent. It has been that kind of meteoric rise for the nation’s third-largest coal company, which formed just eight years ago. On a bluff overlooking Sugar Hollow Park on Tuesday, state and local officials joined about 200 company employees to celebrate the start of site work for the 130,000-square-foot, five-story building. Gov. Bob McDonnell told the first meeting of his Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission yesterday that he wants the commission to make recommendations to him by Oct. 16.
